Kitchen Remodel in Sturbridge, MA

February was a fast and stormy month! Despite countless inches of snow falling outside, we wrapped up a kitchen remodel in Sturbridge, MA. We feel fortunate to be a part of the transformative process.

Our clients said goodbye to the carpeting in their living and dining rooms, and good riddance to the carpeting in their kitchen and welcomed bamboo flooring throughout the first floor. The new flooring not only looks gorgeous, it is incredibly durable and easy to care for. Using the same flooring in all of the adjoining rooms helps them to flow into each other, and makes the space feel more open.

The new kitchen benefits from an improved floor plan that allows for better traffic flow. What was once a cramped "U-shaped" configuration of cabinetry is now a generous "L-shaped" formation. Eliminating less than two linear feet of wall allows the kitchen area to relate better to the adjacent dining room.

The placement of the appliances changed very little, but the newly remodeled space boasts a much more efficient work zone with a larger, deeper, apron-front sink, and more cabinets to provide additional storage. The wall cabinets were extended to the ceiling to maximize storage, and to balance the proportions of the room in relation to the nearby living area which has a vaulted ceiling.

During the initial consultation we assessed the  project scope. Our client's shared the following challenges:  The former "U-shaped" configuration made the kitchen work area feel cramped.

The half-wall was a collecting ground for items because there wasn't a cabinet or countertop beneath it to store things in.

The carpeting was difficult to keep clean.

The kitchen felt closed-off from the dining and living rooms.

Since the rooms were open to each other, the new kitchen needed to relate better with the dining and living areas.

Here are a few photos snapped during the transformation. This picture shows the wall before it was cut down to allow for a larger walkway.

This photo shows the orientation of the dining room table before it was turned ninety degrees. The chandelier above the table was also turned to balance the proportions.

New mirrors installed above the kitchen sink allow light to reflect from the patio door on the opposite wall. The decorative mirrors also allow people standing at the sink to see behind them into the dining area. The new pendant and ceiling lights complement the exisiting light fixtures in the front hallway.
