We love creating solutions that improve function and comfort while blending seamlessly into an environment. This kitchen remodel accomplished the goal of bringing natural light and the beauty of nature into the room with the addition of a patio door that connects to a screened porch, a French door that opens onto a covered deck, and a new window sized appropriately to reside over the client’s sideboard buffet cabinet.
A tall, deep utility cabinet is incorporated into the side of a “drop zone” which greets visitors to the home’s side and front doors. The drop zone signals to guests and family that this is the spot where shoes, coats, hats, and gear reside. The upholstered bench is covered with fabric that is stain resistant, and easy to wipe down. Hidden storage is tucked into the seat of the bench while leaving open space beneath it for shoes. Resilient, Prefinished hardwood Bamboo flooring throughout the new kitchen and dining areas complement the existing Oak flooring on the stairs leading to the floor above.
The kitchen island is the command center of this kitchen. A stainless steel sink is mounted underneath the granite countertop, making it easy to wipe crumbs directly into it. An outlet placed on one end allows appliances to be plugged in without disturbing diners, a towel bar placed on the other end keeps dish towels within arms reach of the sink and dishwasher.
A paper towel holder built into a cabinet that houses receptacles for trash and recycling helps keep the surface of the island clean and tidy. A toe kick heater installed in the sink base cabinet adds warmth to the heart of the space.
Keys conveniently reside near the main entrance, and a mosaic tile backsplash adds natural texture and interest while allowing cooking splatters to be effortlessly cleaned off. A tall, deep pantry alongside the refrigerator contains slide-out shelves making it easier to reach items stored in the back of the cabinet.
The former kitchen and dining spaces lacked connection with each other, and with the natural beauty surrounding them. The ceiling beam separating the two areas is the sole remnant of the previous rooms, other than the two front windows in the dining room which were freshened up with white paint to tie the former elements into the new and improved environment.
A new screened porch replaces the former deck that was hardly used because it was too warm due to its southern exposure. The screened porch offers additional dining space and a comfortable space to entertain family and friends. The new covered side entrance improves safety year round compared to the previous entrance that opened directly into the working zone of the kitchen, making it necessary for the cook to step away from the range when people entered the space. The decking is made of weather-resistant PVC material that won’t split, crack, or splinter. Vinyl handrails and trim ensure that the home will remain low-maintenance for years of enjoyment.
